THE BRONX - Shoppers will have to burn up a few more dollars in their wallet if they want to take home a steak as federal officials say meat prices are on the rise.
U.S. Department of Agriculture statistics show that cattle supply has fallen 4 percent while foreign demand has jumped 21 percent.
Butchers say that the price increase is affecting restaurants as well.
According to butchers, the cuts most affected by the increase are the rib-eye, sirloin and London broil, which come from the midsection of the cow.
Foodservice providers say that restaurants are looking for cheaper cuts of meat like the flat-iron steak or to reduce the quality of the meat they purchase.
