BROOKLYN - Medgar Evers College honored a fallen educator at its commencement ceremony at the Barclays Center Tuesday.

Derrick Griffith, who was the acting dean of student affairs and enrollment, died last month in the Amtrak derailment in Philadelphia. He was 43.

Hundreds of graduates and their families were on hand for the ceremony.

CUNY Prep High School in the Bronx, which Griffith founded, will be named for him.  His memory will also live on at Medgar Evers College.

"We have in the college now established a scholarship that's got approximately $20,000 in there for students who will pursue careers and continue college," says Medgar Evers College President Rudy Crew. "As he would say, just kind of stay at it."

Griffith's mother, Carlea Griffith, says she hopes her son's legacy will inspire kindness and hard work in those who knew him.

Prior to his death, Griffith had just earned a doctorate after years of hard work.
