THE BRONX - Mercy College's Bronx campus is making an effort to thank veterans for their service by dedicating resources to former military members who attend the school.

The school's new veteran center aims to help vets make the transition from soldier to student. It has study tables, computers and other furnishings to help vets relax, like couches, TVs and an Xbox One.

A $10,000 grant from the Student Veterans of America group and Home Depot helped pay for the center. Sen. Jeff Klein also helped secure funds.

In addition to giving veterans a space to study and relax, the center also has a counselor on hand for student vets to speak with.

"It's a personal mentor that's going to be there with the student veterans throughout their entire tenure here at Mercy College," explains Col. Glenn Marchi, the staff advisor for student vets.

Mercy is among just 18 percent of American colleges given a yellow-ribbon designation by the military, officials say. The yellow ribbon is granted to schools that provide "exceptional support" to student veterans.
