THE BRONX - Former New York Mets first baseman Maurice "Mo" Vaughn was selected Wednesday as a successful bidder to redevelop 14 rundown properties in the South Bronx.

One of the properties in question is a building at 1512 Leland Ave. The original owners of the building recently defaulted on their mortgage and went into foreclosure, forcing the city to step in.

Vaughn has committed to investing up to $1 million in emergency repairs.

"I really hope he does the right thing," says tenant Joseph O'Halloran. "I've never in my life seen conditions like [there] are in these buildings."
