SOUNDVIEW - The mother of an 11-year-old girl is demanding answers Friday related to an incident that led to her daughter's arrest and suspension from school.

Maria Aviles says she was handcuffed and escorted out of I.S. 174 by two police officers after a fight with a classmate in February. She says she spent four hours handcuffed to a metal bench at the 43rd precinct before she was released. Police say the incident happened off school grounds. Aviles was charged with assault and suspended from school by the Department of Education.

Now her mother, Dorayma Rivera, is demanding to know why the Department of Education got involved when the incident didn't happen on school grounds. Rivera is also determined to get the assault charge dropped and get her daughter back in school.
