NEW YORK - Today is the fifth anniversary of the collapse of Lehman Brothers investment bank, which triggered a global financial crisis in 2008.

President Barack Obama spoke this afternoon about signs of recovery since the unprecedented collapse.

He drew attention to the still-recovering economy and to what he called a safer system now in place.

The White House used the anniversary to lay out the president's markers for upcoming fiscal fights with Congress over funding the government and raising the nation's debt limit.
