THE BRONX - Montefiore Medical Center has added patient navigators to a handful of its facilities in an effort to treat patients faster and more efficiently.
The job title includes helping patients in the emergency room who may not be in need of emergency medical assistance and redirecting them to an alternative doctor or department for non-urgent needs.
Wendy Schindler was first hired for the position four years ago. Two others have taken on the job at Weiler and Wakefield hospitals.
She says that Montefiore Medical Center is most likely the only hospital in the country to take advantage of the patient navigator position.
