THE BRONX - A Bronx woman fell victim this week to a phone scam alleging her brother had been hurt.

Morrisania resident Georgina Ressy received a text message on Monday telling her that her brother Anthony was injured in an accident. The text urged Ressy to call the sending number.

Ressy says the caller knew personal information about Anthony. He demanded $2,500 to be wired to him through Western Union and said Anthony would be dropped off at the nearest hospital after the money was sent.

Ressy called 911 to discover the whole thing was a scam. Her brother later called back to say he was fine.

The FBI and Bronx district attorney say scams like this are common and occuring elsewhere. If targeted, authorities recommend remaining calm and calling police to provide them with information about the caller's phone number.
