THE BRONX - A Mott Haven food pantry that helps senior citizens is about to celebrate its 1-year anniversary.

The Bronx branch of New York Common Pantry opened last November. It is home to the Nourish Program, aimed at stocking the cabinets of low-income seniors with healthy meals.

Once a month, participants are invited to pick up a grocery package that includes fruits, vegetables, pasta, milk and more. Last month, the pantry saw more than 1,500 patrons, and the goal is to grow that number in the coming year.

“We're actually equipped up to 2,500 at this particular location so we're really excited to be able to do that. In addition to that, this particular program also has mobile services across the Bronx so we partner with senior centers where we take our trucks with the groceries and help registered seniors at those senior centers,” says New York Common Pantry deputy executive director Daniel Reyes.

The pantry also plans to expand the case management services offered there so that seniors who need additional services can get them at the pantry.

Everyone is invited to visit the pantry Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
