Mott Haven Houses residents install own safety cams

THE BRONX - Residents at the Mott Haven Houses have taken matters into their own hands by installing two safety cameras in the building.

Tenants say a spike in crime prompted them to get surveillance cameras for the buildings. Some have even started their own tenant patrol to monitor activity. However, the city?s housing authority says it plans to install its own system, and residents say it can?t come soon enough.

Mott Haven Houses will get a $250,000 federal grant from the department of Housing and Urban Development, to install what NYCHA calls a "layered access control system," with new intercoms, electronic keys and mechanical door locks for all building entrances.
