THE BRONX - Some workers and residents in Mount Hope headed back to school, and the main course of study was rats.
Community Board 4 on Selwyn Avenue hosted a rat academy for maintenance workers, building superintendents and anyone else in the neighborhood who wanted to learn more about the pesky vermin and how to keep them at bay.
The board teamed up with the Department of Health to educate the public due to a resurgence of rats over the past year in the southern part of the area, near the 161st Street corridor.
Exterminators target rat homes in the sewer system, but health inspectors say many buildings also have some sort of rat problem. They recommend eliminating the rodents' shelter, water and food supply.
Inspectors encouraged building owners and supers to share what they learned at the seminar with their tenants.
