THE BRONX - School children were evacuated Wednesday after reports of a smell of gas in Mount Eden, officials say.

Students at P.S. 555 Bronx Academy of Promise, which caters to grades K-8, were evacuated around 9 a.m.

A teacher at the school says the children were evacuated from the building as a precautionary measure, but were let back inside shortly after Con Ed arrived on scene. Parents reportedly removed their children from school and refused to let them back inside the building even though classes resumed to a normal schedule.

According to Con Ed, the odor did not appear to be natural gas and is not related to the utility company .

Officials are working to determine the cause of the smell.
