THE BRONX - The Metropolitan Transportation Authority says it is investigating reports that thousands of signal inspections were falsified.

According to the agency, the inspector general says crucial equipment checks, which are supposed to be conducted every 30 days, were being delayed for days or weeks. An investigation by the inspector general says workers inspected far fewer pieces of equipment than they reported.

The MTA issued a statement saying, "It is important to note that the result of that effort has reinforced that the signal system is safe. We are continuing to work closely with the MTA inspector general, whose office is conducting a parallel investigation."

The MTA says passengers were never in any danger. The agency has demoted one supervisor in the signals division and says others are being reviewed.
