NEW YORK - The MTA is planning to install video cameras and audio recorders on the nation's two busiest commuter rail lines in the wake of last year's deadly derailment in the Bronx.

Transportation officials say the technology will be implemented on most Metro-North Railroad and Long Island Rail Road trains in response to recommendations from the National Transportation Safety Board.

The NTSB called on the MTA to install the safety measures after a Metro-North train jumped the tracks going 82 mph in a 30 mph zone, killing four people and injuring dozens more back in December. Officials have said that the engineer briefly nodded off at the controls.

The inward and outward facing cameras, along with audio, will help monitor the tracks and train engineers to keep riders safer, and aid an investigation in the case of another accident.

The MTA will be requesting proposals from prospective vendors to design the onboard recording systems. The agency says it's also working to quickly install train control technology, designed to automatically stop or slow trains.
