THE BRONX - The MTA has issued 400 violations for more than 300 bus drivers over the past five weeks, as part of an undercover operation.

The undercover officials posing as commuters are watching bus operators for violations such as not having both hands on the wheel, waving at other bus drivers, talking to customers and running red lights.

An MTA spokesperson told News 12 that they started the undercover operation because the number of bus accidents is increasing. Officials say there have been nearly 4,000 accidents in the past six months. That figure is up 10 percent from last year.

Frank Austin, of Transit Workers Union Local 100, calls the undercover practice “unfair” and says minor offenses, such as waving to another driver, should not be grounds for citation.
