THE BRONX - The MTA board voted in favor of new fare hikes today, meaning New York City commuters will have to pay more for their MetroCards.

The board says the nearly 17-percent hike is necessary to plug an $800 million budget gap. The changes include increasing single-ride tickets by 25 cents and unlimited monthly passes will go up $15.

The MTA is also eliminating the unlimited one-day and 14-day MetroCards.

The changes are expected to take effect on Dec. 30.
