THE BRONX - (AP) - Egypt is holding its biggest party in decades,celebrating the resignation of its longtime president after 18 daysof anti-government protests. A grim Vice President Omar Suleiman went on national TV to announce that Mubarak was handing control ofthe country to the military. That came less than 24 hours afterMubarak announced he was transferring most of his powers to thevice president.In Cairo, people erupted with joy, weeping, screaming, handingout candy and hugging each other. The crowd in Cairo's Tahrir Square chanted "The people have toppled the regime."Meanwhile, Egypt's military says it's no substitute for a"legitimate" government and it won't try to be one. In a brieftelevised statement, a military spokesman promised that the armedforces would pave the way for the changes Egyptians want. Hepraised Mubarak for his contributions to the country, thenexpressed the military's condolences for protesters killed in theunrest.
