SOUNDVIEW - A brighter, more positive mural has replaced the mural previously depicting the loss of the 23-year-old man who was killed by police 18 years ago in Soundview.

The mural's artist Hawa Diallo says she wanted to change the picture of Amadou Diallo that was originally painted on Amadou Diallo Place because it reflected sadness, since it was painted right after the shooting.

Diallo was only 23 years old when he was struck and killed by a barrage of 41 bullets from the guns of police officers in the vestibule of his apartment building. Police say they mistook Diallo's wallet for a gun when he reached in his pocket.

Hawa Diallo tells News 12 that the new mural is a "healing painting," that celebrates Amadou and his happiness.

"While, unfortunately, we've seen so many mothers lose their sons at the hands of police," says Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. "I think it's time to start celebrating the life of Amadou Diallo."

The artist included both sour cream and cornmeal in the mural - two of Diallo's favorite foods.

"It's a very beautiful tribute to Amadou," says Diallo's mother, Kadiatou Diallo. "It's a breath of fresh air."

She says the mural is so important because her son was a young man who was driven and passionate to go to school in America and achieve his dreams.
