Murder victim's family seeking harsher domestic-violence penalties

As the suspect in 46-year-old DeAnna Bazemore's murder pleaded not guilty in court today, family members of Bazemore are fighting to make sure a crime

THE BRONX - As the suspect in 46-year-old DeAnna Bazemore's murder pleaded not guilty in court today, family members of Bazemore are fighting to make sure a crime like this never happens again.

Officials say Bazemore was stabbed to death on Aug. 4 by her ex-boyfriend, Maurice Barnar. Barnar has been charged with murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.

The family members of Bazemore have joined with state Assemblyman Eric Stevenson (D-The Bronx) to introduce legislation that would require harsher penalties for repeat offenders.
