Narcotics officer hit with perjury charges in drug-deal case

THE BRONX - An undercover narcotics officer from The Bronx has been arrested and charged with lying under oath about a drug deal that may have never happened. In 2009, Francisco Payano testified in court that he had been in an unmarked car in front of 3940 Bronx Blvd. watching a series of drug transactions take place on the sidewalk. The sworn testimony took place during the trial of a man Payano arrested in the course of the alleged drug deal. However, officials say a surveillance video from the scene revealed that Payano was nowhere near the location where the alleged drug deal was happening. Charges against the person who was arrested by Payano were dropped. Payano has been charged with 64 counts. If convicted, he could face up to seven years in prison.
