THE BRONX - Firefighters responding to a fire early Tuesday found up to 50 cats crammed into a squalid Bronx apartment - with no litter boxes.

Three of the cats were found dead. Two had to be euthanized due to poor health conditions, according to the ASPCA. Officials said the Housing Authority had been trying for at least two years to evict the elderly woman from her apartment at 645 Westchester Ave. in the St. Mary's Houses.

Firefighters say they also found a dog in the apartment and the owner is being treated for smoke inhalation.

Animal Control officials are looking for people willing to foster the cats back to health. Those wishing to help should contact the NY Animal Care and Control at its website.
