THE BRONX - Officers in the NYPD's 44th Precinct pilot community policing program explained their new roles Thursday.

The program placed special police, called neighborhood coordinating officers, throughout the precinct beginning last month.

These officers say their assignment is to walk the beat and get to know the community in their designated areas.

They have work cellphones that residents can call or text them on.

The move is supposed to build stronger ties between police and residents and ease tensions in the community, according to officials.
