THE BRONX - NYPD neighborhood coordination officers organized a back-to-school event in the Bronx where they gave away school supplies to children.

Police officers gave out backpacks and school supplies to over 5,000 children in the Bronx Wednesday. The event hosted by the NYPD even had a dunk tank and games.

Ruel Stephenson, commanding officer and organizer of the event, says it's interactions like these that help build better trust between officers and the community they police in.

"We can work better together, we can solve issues, they can tell us what's wrong and they can help us help them," he says.

At a time when relations between communities and police officers across the U.S. are tumultuous, Bronx residents say police-organized events are important for everyone.
