THE BRONX - Residents living near 137th Street and Lincoln Avenue say they awoke to a chaotic scene early Saturday morning as an NYPD officer was shot while responding to a brawl.

One woman told News 12 that she heard several gunshots, including the one that hit Officer Sherrod Stuart, 25, following a fight at a party of more than 100 people.

NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton says the officers were responding to a "jump-up party," or a large event held at an unlicensed location that often isn't disclosed until an hour before it starts. Neighbors tell News 12 that such chaotic jump-up parties happened all too often.

Officer Stuart was shot in the ankle as he and his partner responded to reports of a large brawl.

Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. went to the scene Saturday to express his concern about jump-up parties.

"It should be a place where you go to have fun," Diaz says. "It shouldn't be a place of death and carnage."

Authorities say Stuart shot the suspected shooter, Christopher Rice, four times after being hit.

Rice is at Lincoln Hospital in serious condition.

Stuart is expected to be OK.
