THE BRONX - Local residents are banding together to clean up a pedestrian footbridge covered in trash, graffiti and broken glass.

The Waterbury Lasalle Community Association and New York City Councilman Jimmy Vacca (D-District 13) are working to improve the overpass, which spans the Bruckner Expressway.

Neighbors say that aside from leaving garbage, shattered glass and graffiti, vandals have also broken the bulbs on streetlights.

The community association says the New York City Department of Transportation is responsible for the cleanup, but neighbors have an obligation to maintain the bridge.

Vacca says he plans on bringing in a machine that would eliminate the graffiti.
