Neighbors: Inspectors blocked from Prospect Ave. building

Residents on Prospect Avenue say that building inspectors were blocked for years from entering the apartment building where a family was killed in a fire

THE BRONX - Residents on Prospect Avenue say that building inspectors were blocked for years from entering the apartment building where a family was killed in a fire Monday.

According to city inspectors, the family died because their apartment was illegally subdivided, with walls blocking their escape. Neighbors tell News 12 The Bronx that drug dealers on the first floor refused to let FDNY and Department of Buildings inspectors inside.

Building inspectors say there was no evidence on the outside that gave them reason to believe the apartment was illegal.

Officials say they're continuing to investigate the deadly fire. It is unclear whether the property owner, Domingo Cedano, will face criminal charges.
