VAN NEST - Bronx residents in Van Nest are celebrating a new bank opening after years of a neighborhood they say has been under-served.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony happened this morning with elected officials and employees of the new bank. Located on Morris Park Avenue at Barnes Street, Cross County Federal Savings Bank is the closest bank to the neighborhood, with the next one about a mile away.

Local merchants and neighbors worked with state Sen. Jeff Klein since 2009 to bring the bank to the neighborhood.

The opening of the bank also serves as a neighborhood morale boost after the neighborhood Post Office announced it was closing this summer. Saint Dominic's Elementary School also just finished its last year.
