New charter school focuses on foster care students

THE BRONX - A new charter school in the Bronx is the first of its kind with a special program that focuses on students in foster care.

A third of Haven Academy students, which has classes up to third grade, are in foster care. Most of the remaining students are in a preventative service program. The school is sponsored by New York Foundling, a citywide private child welfare agency.

Officials say the goal of the school is to provide a safety net for at-risk youths and close the achievement gap between students from stable backgrounds and troubled families. Students are chosen through a lottery system from the applicant pool.
