New commercial space in the works for Melrose

MELROSE - The New York City Economic Development Corporation has announced plans for the construction of two new buildings in Melrose between 149th Street and Westchester Avenue.

The new development will be overseen by Triangle Equities and will include a variety of amenities, among them commercial office space and a supermarket.

Plans also call for a school, restaurants and a public plaza. The city says this project will further expand an already thriving retail district. Some local residents, however, are concerned about increased traffic congestion.

The city-owned piece of land currently has a parking lot and a few other businesses, including a boxing gym.

The Economic Development Corporation says construction should begin in the fall of 2012 and be completed in 2014. The project is expected to generate about 200 permanent jobs.
