New housing initiative launched to fix up buildings

THE BRONX - The city has launched a new initiative to identify apartment buildings before they turn into a state of disrepair.

The Proactive Housing Preservation Initiative will identify 250 buildings every six months to examine if they qualify for some type of intervention.

The goal is to identify deteriorating conditions in the entire building, rather than in just one apartment that has called to complain.

The Department of Housing Preservation and Development, community groups and the City Council will now collect data on at-risk buildings and owners and take action.
