THE BRONX - Livery cab drivers say a new law that protects their employment and guarantees them some benefits is long overdue.

The law sets down rules for livery companies to differentiate between an employee driver and an independent contractor. The guidelines will help drivers and cab companies avoid costly litigation to clarify drivers' statuses. The new measure also provides drivers with workers' compensation benefits if they are injured on the job.

More than 4,000 livery cab drivers are expected to benefit from the law.
