THE BRONX - Construction of a new development along Pelham Parkway has been making steady progress.

The site was once a horse stable belonging to the “Cowboy of Pelham Parkway,” Buster Marengo. Now, two years after the sale of the stable, there are the beginnings of a new 130-unit apartment complex.

The building is called The Equestrian as an homage to the site's history. Inside, units will run $1,800 a month for a studio to about $2,600 for a two-bedroom.

Pelham Parkway's redevelopment has not come without criticism. The project closed sidewalks and fenced off green space as the Parks Department worked on the area. As for the stables, a squatter tried to halt the sale, but to no avail. Despite the hurdles, builder Mark Stagg says The Equestrian will be worth it in the long run.

The Equestrian is accepting applications on its website. It is set to open its doors this spring.
