ALLERTON - Residents of the Parkside Houses in Allerton say when it pours, it rains inside too.

They are among 157,000 NYCHA tenants who have had or will have their rooftops repaired by the Mayor Bill de Blasio's $1.3 billion plan to upgrade public housing buildings over the next decade.

City housing officials say many residents complained of mold, leaks and other problems -- which were the direct result of roofs in disrepair.

"Two-thirds of our buildings are over 60 years old, so they are leaking," says Shola Olatoye, a NYCHA official. "They are the cause of many challenges for our residents."

Work at Parkside is a little less than halfway complete, with six of the 14 rooftops replaced.
