ALBANY - (AP) - New guidelines in New York allow the policeto use hidden cameras when videotaping suspects.
The guidelines, announced yesterday by New York's prosecutorsand police, call for videotaped interrogations of suspects usingcameras that can be in open view or hidden. It's up to eachdepartment.
Investigators are supposed to tell suspects about secretvideotaping if they ask.
Most of New York's 62 counties have started taping some felonyinterrogations. It's considered a way to prevent convictions fromfalse confessions and protect police against allegations ofcoercion.
New York City police plan to start pilot programs next year atprecincts in the Bronx.
