New Willis Ave. Bridge opens

THE BRONX - The new Willis Avenue Bridge officially opened this morning following the completion of a multimillion-dollar construction project.

The new bridge has replaced a 109-year-old swing bridge that was dotted with pot holes and cracks. Drivers say traffic is now flowing much smother.

"It's like an expressway," says Ralph Savarese.

The Department of Transportation says the new bridge's steel structure has wider lanes to accommodate more traffic and cut congestion. The walkway on the bridge is also bigger for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The old bridge will be torn down in about a month, and its parts will be recycled.
