NEW YORK - Consumers are being warned against tax collection scams as the deadline to file approaches.

The state's Division of Consumer Protection says that scammers are posing as representatives from the Internal Revenue Service and the Tax Department to demand immediate payments for back taxes.

According to authorities, some taxpayers are receiving emails with a phony IRS logo and a link to resolve the issue. Some victims are also being targeted by phone.

Officials say that neither state or national tax agencies will ever request personal financial information by phone or email. They encourage anyone who thinks they may have been contacted by a scammer to report the incident.
