NEW YORK - Emergency medical care in the U.S. has received a checkup of its own, and New York's diagnosis could be better.

According to a new report card from the American College of Emergency Physicians, New York State scored a "C" for its emergency room performance, earning points for disaster preparedness, adoption of electronic medical records and staffing. However, it came in with the fourth-longest wait times in the country.

The findings give an overall grade only, without singling out any doctors or hospitals. It uses a number of categories, including quality, patient safety, access to care and medical liability, among several others.

The "C" grade is still above the national average of a "D-plus." The District of Columbia came in at the top with a "B-minus," while Wyoming flunked out with an "F."
