THE BRONX - With temperatures dropping, News 12 is shedding light on tenants' rights to heat and hot water.

Officials with the Department of Housing Preservation and Development say all landlords are legally required to turn up their thermostats from Oct. 1 and May 31.

If the outside temperature is below 55 degrees between the hours of 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., the inside temperature should read at least 68 degrees. If the outside temperature is below 40 degrees, the inside temperature should read at least 55 degrees.

Tenants without heat are urged to notify their building owner, managing agent or superintendent. If heat isn't restored, tenants should call the city's customer service center at 311 to file a complaint.
