THE BRONX - New York City Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott is reassuring parents of their children's safety as they return to their classrooms following Friday's school massacre in Newtown, Conn.

Walcott addressed concerns in an open letter on the Board of Education's website that reads in part, "In the wake of such an event...We have been in constant communication with the NYPD and their school safety division, whose vigilance keeps our schools safe."

Some city schools are conducting drills to stay prepared for emergencies. Safety officers have also been stationed outside schools to help ease fears. Educators and parents say the goal is to make students feel safe and to stick to their normal routines.

Many school officials say the shooting won't be mentioned unless it is brought up in class.
