North Central Bronx Hospital to reopen maternity ward this summer

Officials say they’re taking the time to safely restore services, while upgrading the unit and recruiting staff. (3/18/14)

THE BRONX - The North Central Bronx Hospital has announced that it will reopen its delivery and labor unit sometime this summer.

The Norwood hospital has been at the center of months of protests since its inpatient maternity ward was shut down last August due to staff shortages.

Hospital officials first planned to reopen the department by April, but they now say that the state's Department of Health has given them the time needed to safely restore services without fear of beds being decertified.

NCBH has reportedly invested $4.5 million in upgrades and is recruiting staff, including midwives and nurses, in order to offer 24-hour care within the unit.
