Norwood residents upset with broken fire hydrants, sewer grates

Residents in the borough's Norwood section are complaining about broken catch basins and falling fire hydrants that have been neglected for more than a year.

NORWOOD - Residents in the borough's Norwood section are complaining about broken catch basins and falling fire hydrants that have been neglected for more than a year. People who live in the area say repairs to the sewer grates are beyond necessary, and that they have contacted city officials to no avail. "If a senior citizen or any pedestrian sees it, at night especially, their ankle and their whole leg is going to drop into the hole and they're going to break a bone," says community activist Sidney Flores. Other residents say the fire hydrant problem is an even larger safety concern. Some hydrants operate normally, while others are tilted on their side or completely missing. "If there was a fire, we would have some issues with putting it out," resident John Yant says. Officials at the Department of Environmental Protection say they are investigating the problems.
