THE BRONX - The Archdiocese of New York says it will be shutting down three Catholic schools in the Bronx at the end of this school year.

Officials say a total of six Catholic schools will be closing down. Superintendent Dr. Timothy Mcniff says Saint Ann School, Visitation School and Saint Mary School will all close this summer. He says "significant portions of the facilities are unutilized."

Parents of students at Saint Ann School say they're stunned, and found out only through a letter.

"It's about the quality of the education. It's about leaving us out of the loop, like we're not part of the community, like we're nobody," says parent Asuncion Bardina.

The letter was sent home with students Monday, listing other schools in the Archdiocese they could attend next year. The organization says that all students impacted will be guaranteed seats at schools within the Archdiocese.

Officials say Saints Peter and Paul School will also be transitioning from a kindergarten through eighth-grade school into a universal pre-K school starting next school year.

The Archdiocese released a statement saying, "These are difficult but necessary decisions, and working together we will ensure our Catholic schools are stronger than ever."
