NEW YORK - Businesses across the country Thursday closed their doors to mark a "Day Without Immigrants," the result of a social media campaign condemning President Donald Trump's executive orders on immigration and travel.

On East 174th Street in the Bronx, almost the entire block shut down. Some stores placed signs in their windows repeating the catchphrase in Spanish: "Un Dia Sin Inmigrantes."

Some businesses that did not participate also posted signs in support of the movement, like a pharmacy that had to remain open to provide medicine to customers.

Trump has vowed to step up deportations across the country, build a wall along the southern border and ban travelers from seven majority Muslim countries from entering the United States.

The social media campaign urged undocumented workers, legal workers and immigrants to stay home from work in an effort to illustrate the importance of immigrant workers to daily life.

According to data from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, more foreign-born workers had jobs in the food industry in 2015 than homegrown citizens. And the city Department of Immigrant Affairs tweeted that immigrant New Yorkers make up nearly half of the city's workforce and account for a third of total earnings.
