City Councilman Ydanis A. Rodriguez is proposing legislation to create an alert system to track down hit-and-run drivers modeled on the Amber Alert system that helps spread the word about abducted children.

Lawmakers say there were 39 hit-and-run deaths in New York City last year, including that of Jean Paul Guerrero, better known as the popular DJ Jinx Paul.

Rodriguez says the alerts would be sent to smartphones within 12 hours of an incident. They would include descriptions of any vehicles involved. The alerts would only include hit-and-run collisions that caused either a death or serious injury, which are felonies.

Fellow city and state lawmakers have expressed support for the bill.

But opponents say people who receive a message that they don't feel concerns them may unsubscribe from the city's alert system.
