NYC lawmakers pass $63B budget for next year

NEW YORK - (AP) - New York City lawmakers have passed a spendingplan for the next fiscal year.

The City Council approved the $63 billion budget Tuesday. Itincludes about $1 billion in cuts, including thousands of job cutsand reductions to city services.

Officials say New Yorkers will notice the effects.

The next fiscal year begins Thursday.

The City Council did manage to restore some jobs and servicesthat were in danger of being eliminated.

Twenty fire engine companies were saved. City swimming poolswill stay open the entire season, instead of a shorter period thissummer.
