THE BRONX - The Department of Education (DOE) is proposing 90-day suspension periods for students caught sending suggestive text or picture messages on their cell phones or computers.

Under the proposal, next year students could face suspension for "sexting" at any time, even outside of school hours. They could also be suspended for "cyber-bullying," which is targeting another with threatening messages online or through texts.

The DOE's Margie Feinberg says the 90-day suspension is one of the more severe options and that other punishments could include community service or removal from an extra-curricular activity.

A hearing on the proposal will be held Wednesday.
