NEW YORK - The NYPD announced that 2012 ended with the lowest number of homicides in New York City since reliable record keeping began in 1963.

There were 418 murders, compared to the previous record low of 471 in 2009.

Authorities say that most victims knew their assailants, and more than half were shot.
