NYC to lay off teachers, but not police officers

NEW YORK - (AP) - Mayor Michael Bloomberg will give a budgetupdate today for the upcoming fiscal year, but city officialsalready say they won't have to shrink the police force as planned.

New York City may have to eliminate thousands ofteacher jobs but won't have to shrink the police force as plannedin the next fiscal year.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg gives a budget update Thursday for thefiscal year beginning July 1.

They say they'll be able to avoid the proposed cut of 892 officersfrom the 35,000-officer police force.
