NEW YORK - Data released by the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) suggests that the NYPD is wrong 98 percent of the time when it comes to stop and frisks.

Police made nearly 533,000 stops in 2012 with guns being recovered 1 out of every 729 stops, according to the NYCLU.

The group also believes that there is a racial component to the frisks. They say nearly 55 percent were black followed by 32 percent Latino. Nearly 10 percent were white.

The third most stops of any precinct in the city last year was the 40th Precinct in Mott Haven with 18,276, according to the data.

The Floyd vs. the City of New York trial, which accuses the police of unfairly targeting minorities, ended this week with the judge expected to rule on whether changes are needed for the tactic.

NYPD officials have testified defending the policy, saying the tactic has helped keep murder rates at a record low in the city. The NYPD says it targets crime-ridden neighborhoods to search for suspects on the loose, who just happen to often be blacks and Hispanics.
