THE BRONX - A woman is dead after she was struck by a car Saturday evening in Van Nest and police have arrested the driver who was allegedly drunk.

Nydja Herring, 32, was found unconscious at the intersection of Van Nest and East Tremont avenues at 5:20 p.m. Saturday. Herring's older brother says she was probably running errands and was struck just a block from her apartment.

Police have arrested the driver of the white Volkswagen, 28-year-old Augustus Jenkins, and charged him with aggravated driving while intoxicated and operating a vehicle without a license. Police say he had three other people in the car with him, including two children.
